Sapporo Makes Beer From Space Barley

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Want to know what beer from space tastes like? The Japanese beer company Sapporo has created 250 six-packs of beer made from barley grown on the International Space Station.

According to AFP , demand for the beer has been high. Each six-pack is selling for 10,000 yen ($110), which is about $20 per bottle.

"We have received orders from 2,000 people by Sunday. We believe this shows people's interest is high, considering the rather high price for six bottles," said company spokesman Yuki Hattori.

Sapporo will continue to accept orders until Dec. 24, and then the lucky recipients will be chosen by lottery. Hattori said the taste of beer with space-grown barley is the same, but the selling point is that it tastes the same.

The barley was cultivated for five months in the Russian lab on the ISS. The Russian space project is looking at how to grow edible plants in space.

In 2007 NASA's Endeavour crew cultivated cinnamon basil seeds on the International Space Station for 20 days.
